Its production has its roots in the island's history, when the Arabs introduced sugar cane and Frederick II of Swabia, during the Norman domination, helped increase its cultivation, calling it Sicily's ‘white gold’. Over the years, sugarcane production remained as a tradition only in Avola and in 1700, rum distillation was started.
